AI-HDR

POC conducted to identify the most effective image processing APIs for HDR and advanced visual editing using AI-powered OCR.

Introduction

In a step towards enhancing image processing capabilities within our platform, we developed a Proof of Concept (POC) focused on evaluating a broad set of image editing APIs and libraries. The initiative aimed to assess both open-source and cloud-based solutions to identify tools capable of high-quality image transformations, particularly for HDR (High Dynamic Range) processing.

Challenges

At a Glance

Here are the challenges we encountered during the application’s development phase

1

Need for High-Quality HDR Blending

Creating HDR images from multiple exposure brackets required a reliable method to blend them seamlessly while preserving clarity and dynamic range. Existing tools lacked consistency across image types.

2

Inconsistent Performance Across Image Editing Tasks

Tasks such as exposure correction, window masking, sky replacement, and object removal often produced varying results depending on the API or library used, impacting the final image quality.

3

Difficulty in Integrating Diverse APIs

Many APIs posed challenges in integration, with some lacking proper documentation or not aligning well with the existing tech stack (React.js, Node.js, Express.js).

4

Scalability and Efficiency Concerns

Operational efficiency and scalability were essential for future product growth. Several tools lacked the performance or pricing structure to support scale without compromising speed or cost.

5

Lack of Clear Evaluation Metrics

Before the POC, there was no standardized way to compare visual output quality or integration efficiency across tools, making confident selection difficult.

Solutions Blueprint

DEVtrust implemented several innovative solutions to address these challenges

API Benchmarking

Evaluated open-source and commercial tools (OpenCV, Adobe SDKs, Google Vision, etc.) across HDR, masking, and editing tasks.

Custom HDR Pipeline

Built a reliable HDR blending workflow using OpenCV with tuned exposure fusion.

Modular Integration Layer

Developed Node.js middleware for seamless API testing and compatibility with our React.js frontend.

Scalability Testing

Assessed tools on speed, cost, and load handling to shortlist scalable options.
